“What I love about Artedomus is that we value the old arts and crafts, but we are also innovative,” says Katie Farrall, who is our South Australia Business Development Manager and Artedomus’ first person to be based in Adelaide. Our move into Adelaide marks an exciting evolution for us, and Katie is the perfect person to champion our vision.
Katie started out studying classical history before moving into a post-graduate degree in archaeology. But academia and digging in the dirt were not her true calling, so she tried her hand at singing, and acting in TV and film. For a while she appeared regularly on morning TV doing advertorials – “Hi Jan! I’m here to talk about Time Life and the new Slim Dusty box set!” (Yes, painful.) Katie then decided to pursue her lifelong passion for design, a field in which she has now worked for over 20 years. She loves everything technical, values her role as a go-to advisor on all things spec, and loves to help your design come to life with support and ease.
Q: Can you describe a day in your role at Artedomus?
At the moment, I’m introducing Artedomus to the Adelaide market. We have a reputation that precedes us, being known for beautiful stone. I’m the first person to be based in Adelaide for Artedomus and so I’m seeing people that know and love us, helping people with selections they’ve already made, and getting everyone – known and new – excited! I’m like a kid in a candy store with boxes of beautiful products, visiting people with tables’ worth of ceramics, porcelain and natural stone samples they can touch and feel.
Q: What sparked your interest in design, and how did it lead you to where you are today?
I’ve always loved design, but at the urging of my family I went to university and focused on history with a post-grad in archaeology. The thing I loved the most in history was the architecture. So, after going off and trying my hand at singing and acting in TV and film, I eventually requalified in interior design.
I think what is best about humanity is our ability to make beautiful things throughout history. Despite the state of the world, we still manage to make the most exquisite spaces and things, both historical and contemporary. And there is joy and beauty in those things. It keeps me endlessly inspired.
What I love about Artedomus is that we value the old arts and crafts, but we are also innovative. You think of the earthiness of our artisan-made terracottas and the quiet beauty of our Japanese handcrafted tiles. And then you look to the innovative work of bathroom brand Agape’s designers, Lithos Design’s Italian-made decorative tiles, and Active 2.0 which is a self-cleaning surface that is fused to our porcelain panels and tiles. From the gentlest travertines to the boldest of Maximum Statuario marble – there is both history and future written into every facet of the Artedomus range.
Q: What is the mindset that you bring to every new project?
I like to work very supportively– I’m happy to suggest things and come up with ideas if needed. I think of my clients as my community because they are – my community and my people. I like to keep it friendly, supportive, creative and fun. I feel very passionate about what I do.
