Birdblack Design has approached the interior design of this multi-award-winning home with meticulous consciousness. Among the carefully chosen selections is the striking Inax Sekiha porcelain tile which clads the central fireplace.

‘Hai Lang’ means wave in Mandarin, a nod to the clients’ cultural roots and the property’s unique beachfront location. Building designer Jason Harb of JIH Building Design has crafted Hai Lang Residence to mirror the graceful shapes and movements of the waves. Meanwhile Birdblack Design has carefully curated the interiors to complement the distinct architecture.
From carefully chosen selections to layout intricacies and design elements, every facet blends fluidly, and in harmony with one another. “The vision for the main living area was to create a warm and inviting atmosphere, divided into three distinct zones: the kitchen, the dining room, and the lounge room,” says Sarah Nolen of Birdblack Design. The fireplace is a key visual anchor of this open-plan space and, as Laura says, required a carefully chosen cladding to ensure the design’s success, given its prominent scale.
“I was immediately drawn to the Inax Sekiha tile for its three-dimensional form. Up close, it’s a work of art, featuring staggered heights and textures, while from a distance, it appears as a refined, linear fabric-like pattern – subtle and cohesive,” says Sarah. “I loved the oriental influence of this tile, handcrafted in Japan, which beautifully complements our handmade Japanese paper pendant light above the Kitchen Island,” she says.
Inspired by ancient Japanese temples, Sekiha’s design emulates the temples’ rusticated, interwoven copper sheet roofing, against fields of harvested rice stacked in layers awaiting collection. For Hai Lang Residence, Birdblack Design has selected the tonally calm Sekiha SKH1.
At every turn, the curves of this house embrace you, enveloping you in comforting warmth. This is particularly evident in the walk-in robe where curves flow seamlessly from dressing table, to mirror, to pendant lighting.
