The Riverview House by Nobbs Radford Architects is a deft reworking of a 70s brown brick house in Sydney. Skillful design achieves a minimalist feel without sacrificing warmth. The clever introduction and use of materials such as stone, concrete, solid timber, steel, porcelain and copper work back with the original elements of the house – including parquetry and timber beams – creating a materiality and richness of texture that is fresh and modern.

“The size of the Maximum slabs (3000 × 1500 × 6mm) were very appealing to us,” says architect Alison Nobbs, “this was a particularly long kitchen, so it was important that there were a minimal number of joints to create a seamless effect. “The panel depth (6mm) gave us the fine edge we were looking for with the bench top and we were drawn to the materiality… the soft velvety grey worked really well with our colour palette,” she says. “Overall, Maximum’s inherent properties, like its strength and durability, were as important and as good as its look.”
